Catch Me If You Can is a 2002 biographical crime drama film directed by Steven Spielberg, and produced by Steven Spielberg and Walter F. Parkes. The movie is based on Catch Me If You Can, by Frank Abagnale. The movie stars Leonardo DiCaprio as Frank Abagnale Jr., Tom Hanks as Carl Hanratty, Christopher Walken as Frank Abagnale Sr., Martin Sheen as Roger Strong, Amy Adams as Brenda Strong, and Nathalie Bayeas Paula Abagnale. The film was distributed by DreamWorks. The music was done by John Williams. The cinematography was done by Janusz Kamiński. The editing was done by Michael Kahn. Last but not least the studio was Amblin Entertainment. The budget for this movie was $52 million. The box office (earnings) was $352,114,312.

A synopsis of the story is, in 1963, teenager Frank Abagnale lived in New Rochelle, New York with his parents Frank, Sr., and Paula Abagnale. When Frank Sr. tries to get a business loan at Chase Manhattan Bank it is rejected due to problems with the IRS. The family is then forced to move from their large home to a small apartment. While all of this is going on, Frank poses as a substitute teacher in his French class. This is where Frank’s scamming begins. Frank's parents file for divorce, and Frank runs away. When he runs out of money, he begins his new role as a scammer. Frank's cons begin to grow and he impersonates an airline pilot for Pan Am. He forges Pan Ampayroll checks and succeeds in stealing over $4 million. Banks being to catch on to Frank’s scams and they assign the case to FBI agent Carl Hanratty, who heads the bank fraud department. Carl chases Frank around the country, and during this time Frank poses as a doctor in Georgia where he falls in love with a nurse named Brenda Strong. They both then move back to Louisiana where Brenda’s parents reside. Frank then becomes a lawyer and works at Brenda’s father Roger’s firm. A few days later Frank asks Brenda’s hand in marriage. Carl soon catches on and ends up driving Frank out of the country and into France where he catches Frank. Frank was sentenced to 12 years in prison. Carl convinces the FBI to offer Frank a deal by which he can live out the remainder of his sentence working for the bank fraud department of the FBI. The film ends with Frank being happily married for 26 years, has three sons, lives in the Midwest, and is still good friends with Carl. Frank has caught some of the world's greatest money forgers, and because of his doings he earns millions of dollars each year because of his work creating unforgeable checks.

What makes Catch Me If You Can a great movie, from a not so good one, for starters are the actors. You need well-known faces in a film to show that there is some potential for a good show. Next, are the actor’s good performers? If so that helps a great deal. Leonardo DiCaprio uses many interesting techniques for such a young man that aids him immensely in his scamming. It amazes me how DiCaprio can play so many different characters in one film. One minute going from a Pan Am pilot, to a secret service agent, to a doctor, then even to a lawyer with all different dialects for each character. A second performer is Tom Hanks. Every movie he has ever acted in, he uses a different dialect. It is mind blowing how one person can sound so different from their everyday voice. What Steven Spielberg did by having these two men, DiCaprio and Hanks, perform together in a film was a great choice. The way the actors worked together in this production really changed the viewer’s perspective of the film for the better. Spielberg is known for this in most all of his films. So if you like comedy, some action, and suspense, Catch Me If You Can is a great choice to watch. I would personally recommend this film to anyone due to the broad range of genres, and actors that are included in this film.
